“price is only an issue . . .
. . . in the absence of perceived value.”
Ok, so I am no writer but have been thinking about writing some thoughts on different business models and shopping around for the best price. I have toyed with the idea of putting my thoughts out about the “globo gym” that only cost $9.99/month and the many companies that follow along the same guidelines. I have mostly kept it to myself and some friends as I didn’t want it to come off the wrong way. Then I realized, I don’t care how it sounds. So here it is…
PRICE and VALUE are two completely different things.
There are many things that we shop around for to find the best PRICE and I do it also. For example, I will go to Amazon to get a lot of things because it is the SAME as everywhere else but it is cheaper. I spend less money on the SAME product and that makes me happy… and my wife happy.
But here is where I believe people go WAY WRONG…
Not everything is created equal. All cars are not the same, all tattoo artists are not the same and all CrossFit coaches and gyms ARE NOT THE SAME. I have tattoos and I promise you this, I do not go around seeing which one will give me a deal. I found Chris Howton and he is the best around and he is NOT the cheapest nor does he want to be. Here is why, he offers a superior product and you pay for that. You don’t drive to the BMW dealership and ask them to match the price of a Kia for your new M3… sure it is a car, it has 4 wheels and an engine. It takes you place to place and may even be the same color but it is not created equal and that is why it differs in cost.
Obviously I post this to talk about CrossFit. They are not created equal and the coaches that coach at each particular gym are not created equal. GO VISIT, ASK WHY???.. Hang out for a while and see what goes on…..get a GREAT VALUE not the cheapest around….it is cheap for a reason.
Spot on josh. Glad you finally let it out!!!!! Very good perspective.
ReplyYou’ve got to learn to quit beating around the bush and come on out and say what’s on your mind.
ReplyJosh, great point but I think you missed the overall value point. Amazon might be cheaper but do you get the value or the experience or advise from shopping online? The same value you offer in your gym, for a price, is the same value a lot of local retailer offer. Overall I agree we need to look at value(which you offer MUCH more than the $10 gyms do) but we also need to support local businesses.
ReplyWhitney… I didn’t think about that when I posted and used Amazon as an example… you are correct..thanks for posting.
